Tuesday night bike time trials

Last night I did the Tuesday night bike time trial. 8 miles in 18:24, which is OK for me. Placed 6th overall, but pretty well among the old guys. It was pretty tough conditions: 94 degrees and humid, heat index of 103.

Quick question - I noticed that you use an aero disc cover on a clincher wheel. How? Because you passed me on the bike at the Lake Conroe triathlon last October (good race). Did you see a big difference in your bike times after installing that disc cover? Thanks.

Hi! The "disk wheel" is a plastic wheel cover, attached to a regular spoked wheel. The wheel cover is from http://www.wheelbuilder.com/
It costs about $85 if you have them do all the cutting to match your spoked wheel, and is very easy to install. I think it is significantly faster than a spoked wheel, and essentially the same as "real" disk. The plastic cover is about 400 grams, so it won't be as light as a real disk. - Dave H.

Appreciate the info. I actually just ordered that same disc cover earlier this morning from Wheelbuilder, so I'm looking forward to getting it installed before my next triathlon (Couples Tri on July 15th). Hoping the weight penalty will be offset by the ability to carry more speed on the flats & downhills. Good luck on your next event. - Hugo
