Tueday night bike time trial

A pretty good ride for me at the Tuesday night bike time trial. 8 miles in 18:08 on a hot day, with some wind. Average speed of 26.5 mph. I was 4th place, and the first of the moderately old guys. Jon did his best time, 19:02.

Wool Capital Triathlon in San Angelo, TX

I did the Wool Capital Triathlon again this year, a 1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run. I really like this race. Its small (only about 110 people), and a nice course, mostly in a park. The drive out to San Angelo from Austin is nice, very little traffic, and a lot of small towns. The drive went pretty quick, Lisa and I just talked and played CDs the whole way. I was worried I might be miserable during the race, since I had a cold all week, but it turned out OK.

The race started in three groups, 5 minutes apart, as is usual for triathlons now. The old people (over 40) started first, with the younger competitors in the latter two groups. The swim is in a typical Texas lake, which is a dammed river. I was in second place for the first half of the swim, then moved into first and finished with a small lead. I started the bike first, and rode pretty easy until I got caught at about the 15 mile mark. For the next 10 miles I followed about 100 yards behind the first cyclist, and finished the bike in 2nd place, with an average speed of 23.9 mph, which is pretty good for me. The 10K run was not fast (45:04), but steady. I did get caught by a couple of the younger guys who started behind me, but at least I didn't completely fall apart.

My final time was 2:11:52, just a few seconds slower than last year. 5th place overall, first in my age group.
